You must be wondering how can a novel be Musical? This book is quite unique and experimentative in approach compared to our typical old style of writing. If nothing else, this book deserves 5-star ratings for its unique concept and approach. It could be a new trendsetter in the world of writing. The book points out that listening to music is actually an art. We listen to as time pass, entertainment, in the background so that we don’t get bored while working or driving in traffic or while traveling in public transport, etc. The author points out that LISTENING to music is a very focused activity. The characters of the book are musically inclined, born in 80s and raised in 90s. It definitely makes you nostalgic about the whole era of indie-pop, tazos, phantom sweet cigarettes, audio and video cassettes, etc. More than that, we appreciate the efforts the author has taken to get the permissions from the music companies, lyricists, etc to write about them in the book and also the efforts behind the scientific research. After reading this book, you will definitely listen to music like Rajvir and the secret letter-writer. You will change your perception about the music, you will listen to music differently.
As the subtitle says, ‘Conversations in every heart via forgotten art’ – it deals with handwritten letters, forgotten art of listening to quality music, diminishing art of reading the book, etc. More than that what we loved is that it deals with the characters with daily activities like in a normal day of any person would be a mixture of many things like – he/she may go to office, in between get distracted and read a blog article, go to social media sites, gossip a bit, work, listen to music, watch a video on mobile, chat with someone on Whatsapp, etc. We never have a day fixed with one single activity, we are fragmented between many things. We may talk about politics and suddenly the topic will tilt towards movies. Our conversations in a day are flowy in nature, differs from person to person we meet or come across. The book captures this instinctive flow beautifully.
The heart-warming story aims to bring back the lost charm of the 90s when songs were used to express feelings and emotions. It was a time when handwritten letters were the mode of communication. Those romantic stories are very special where love was all about the pure feelings, meaningful, in-depth conversations, exchanging letters and music.
Music is a drug, a healthy one, which heals scars and helps one to feel rejuvenated. One’s choice of music reveals the characteristics of the person, his/her current mood, etc. For the first time, a fiction book has discussed the neuroscience behind the music. This is one of the simplest therapies that can activate neurons and connect with different regions of the brain simultaneously. That is the reason it is used to cure amnesia, schizophrenia and other allied diseases in patients. The narration of the novel revolves around its protagonist Rajvir who connects with a stranger. They soon become good friends when they realize they share the same interest –music. They start bonding over everything they love—the histories of remixes, Indian pop bands, famous actors and more. This newly found friendship changes Rajvir’s monotonous life. He starts feeling content, confident and secure. The duo exchange books, gifts, music and letters frequently and wait for the day when they can meet each other face to face. On the other hand, Rajvir also develops a great friendship with his new business partner Taashvi. Long discussions about business, Mumbai, and movies bring them close. As his life takes an unexpected turn, the readers will be thrilled to know who Rajvir would choose as his life-partner.
